Honduras Restarts Vote Count After Three-Day Pause

(MENAFN) Honduran election officials restarted the vote tally on Monday following a three-day pause that fueled national tensions, with conservative contender Nasry Asfura still holding a razor-thin edge after the Nov. 30 presidential polls.

By 2:09 p.m. local time (2009GMT), the Honduran National Election Council (CNE) reported that more than 91% of ballots had been processed. Asfura, the National Party candidate, led with 40.11%, narrowly ahead of Salvador Nasralla of the centrist Liberal Party, who stood at 39.73%.

Rixi Moncada, representing President Xiomara Castro’s Libre Party, remained in third position with 19.17%.

The prolonged information blackout since Friday had left voters anxious amid what observers describe as the country’s most contentious election in years.

Tensions escalated on Sunday when the Libre Party demanded the annulment of the general election results. The party accused US President Donald Trump of interfering by publicly endorsing Asfura, pledging support for Honduras should he win, and attacking Moncada, whom he allegedly labeled a communist and corrupt.

CNE President Ana Paola Hall said the multi-day interruption stemmed from a third round of “technical problems” that caused the system to fail.

Election officials have also reported facing repeated challenges, including alleged attempts to breach and manipulate the software used for transmitting results.
