Asfura, Trump Talks to Focus on Migration, Commerce

(MENAFN) Honduras’ recently inaugurated president, Nasry Asfura, is scheduled to hold talks with US President Donald Trump at Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. The agenda for the encounter is expected to center on migration matters and bilateral trade relations.

This encounter will be the first direct meeting between the two leaders since Trump publicly endorsed Asfura during the 2025 presidential race, a gesture that sparked criticism and allegations of outside meddling in Honduras’ electoral process.

Speaking at a media briefing, Honduran Foreign Minister Mireya Aguero verified that the talks are planned for the weekend. She added that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with a Honduran delegation, is anticipated to be present.

“I believe this is a historic meeting. Rarely do we see such a high-level encounter so soon after a president’s inauguration. To echo the president’s words, Honduras is going to be fine,” Aguero said.

Juan Carlos Garcia, Honduras’ Secretary of the Presidency, explained that Asfura intends to raise concerns about Honduran citizens residing in the United States, in addition to the tariffs levied on Honduran goods by the Trump administration.

“The most important issues are the more than two million Hondurans living abroad. Let us remember that we receive over $11 billion in remittances,” Garcia said.

On the commercial front, Honduras was one of the nations impacted by Trump’s worldwide trade dispute and faced a 10% duty on all exported products. These policies have placed significant strain on the Honduran economy, given that 46.2% of the country’s exports—valued at $3.99 billion—are shipped to the United States, according to figures from the Central Bank of Honduras.
